There are four basic functions that tests are serving. These include: to provide an assessment of the individual's understanding of the material, they are helping to develop critical thinking, it evaluates a person's ability to look at the situation from different viewpoints and it helps everyone to analyze how the material will have an effect on the way they see the world around them. This is important, because the combination of these functions help us to effectively reach out to a host of individuals and to understand if everyone is able to comprehend the material that has been presented. The pros of multiple choice, true -- false, matching tests, essay and short answer exams are they help everyone to think critically. The cons of these kinds of tests are that they can often look at specific subject matter that based on theoretical principals. However, in the real world they may not help someone to effectively troubleshoot the problem and use common sense. This could hurt an individual's ability to adapt to a host of situations. (Davis, 2011)
